Washington Square is an innovative, internationally-distributed literary journal publishing fiction and poetry by emerging and established writers. Edited and produced biannually by the students of the NYU Graduate Creative Writing Program, Washington Square also sponsors an annual literary contest judged by eminent poets and writers (poet Nick Flynn and novelist Darin Strauss were the 2007 judges), and hosts a series of readings in NYC.

Contributors have included Steve Almond, Billy Collins, Martha Cooley, Mahmoud Darwish, Stephen Dixon, Mark Doty, Choman Hardi, Bob Hicok, Brenda Hillman, Venus Khoury-Ghata, David Lehman, Rick Moody, Sharon Olds, Marie Ponsot, Matthew Rohrer, and Charles Simic.
