Jonathan Lethem and Darin Strauss
Award-winning writer Jonathan Lethem is the author of many books of fiction, including the celebrated novel Motherless Brooklyn and Men and Cartoons: Stories. Darin Strauss is the author of the international best-selling novel Chang and Eng and The Real McCoy.

The Goldwater Hospital Writing Project Benefit

Honoring poet Tomas Tranströmer, with Robert Bly, Sharon Olds, and the Goldwater Hospital Writers

Tranströmer is the recipient of the 2006 Jean Kennedy Smith NYU Creative Writing Award of Distinction. Volunatary donations are requested at the door to support the Goldwater Writing Project.

The Agha Shahid Ali Memorial Reading

A Celebration of the Poetry of Mahmoud Darwish with Breyten Breytenbach, Carolyn Forché, Marilyn Hacker, Elias Khoury, Vénus Khoury-Ghata, and Jeffrey Sacks

This reading of work by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish coincides with the publication of the new book of poems in English translation, Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone? (trans. Jeffrey Sacks), by Archipelago Books. The Agha Shahid Ali Memorial Reading is an annual event in memory of the late Kashmiri-American poet who taught at NYU before his death in 2001. This reading is an affiliate event of the 2006 PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature.

Tory Dent

Poets reading and paying tribute to Tory will include:

Marilyn Hacker, Galway Kinnell, Yusef Komunyakaa, Stanley Moss, Sharon Olds, Marie Ponsot and Adrienne Rich

Tory Dent is the author of three volumes of poetry: Black Milk; HIV, Mon Amour, which won the 1999 James Laughlin Award and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; and What Silence Equals, the title taken from a slogan by the AIDS activist group Act Up. Her honors include grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund; The Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award; and three PEN American Center Grants for Writers with AIDS. She passed away in December, 2005.
