Washington Square is an innovative, nationally-distributed literary journal publishing fiction and poetry by emerging and established writers. Edited and produced biannually by the students of the NYU Graduate Creative Writing Program, Washington Square also sponsors an annual literary contest judged by eminent poets and writers (poet Eamonn Grennan and novelist Jayne Anne Phillips were the 2008 judges), and hosts an annual benefit reading in NYC.

In addition to exciting emerging writers, 2007-2008 contributors included Anne Carson, Gentian Cocoli, Nguyen Do, Stephen Dunn, Thomas Sayers Ellis, Eamon Grennan, Terrance Hayes, Phillis Levin, Todd Hasak-Lowy, Etgar Keret, Yusef Komunyakaa, Jeffrey McDaniel, Howard Norman, Donald Revell, Nguyen Trai, Cesar Vallejo, and many others.

2007-2008 brought many new changes to Washington Square. Sam Potts of McSweeney’s was hired to redesign the magazine, revitalizing its pages with a bold graphic cover and fresh, spare style. Creative Writing professors Matthew Rohrer and Darin Strauss were added to the editorial staff as Executive Editors, providing valuable faculty guidance and support for our graduate student editors. Washington Square now also includes transcriptions of New Salon interviews that have taken place at Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House. The fall issue featured Dan Chiasson in conversation with Alice Quinn; the spring issue featured Peter Carey in conversation with Darin Strauss. In addition, a new Portfolio provides space for visual artists and photographers to display their work; photographs by Thomas Sayers Ellis were published in the spring issue. The editorial staff has also committed themselves to a renewed focus on translation, presenting readers with international writers like Fabricio Carpinejar and Manoel de Barros in their original languages and English.
