Creative Writing Internships

The Creative Writing Program offers credit for internships with organizations related to the field of creative writing (e.g. a literary agency, a literary magazine or book publisher, a literary outreach program, a non-profit arts organization, etc.). Past creative writing interns have worked at such companies and organizations as the Community Word Project, Alfred A. Knopf, Folio Literary Management, and Blender Magazine. Students seeking internship credit must enroll in an associated seminar in which they reflect on their experiential learning.

In order to apply for and receive departmental credit for an internship, you must be a declared Creative Writing Minor who has already taken or are currently taking your second V39 course.  You must obtain Program approval to register for a Creative Writing Internship.

CAS students are not permitted to take more than 12 points of independent study and/or internship, and no more than 8 points may be taken in any one department.  (Independent study and/or internship courses taken in other divisions of the University or at other universities do not count toward the College degree.)  This policy may vary at NYU's other undergraduate schools.  Students in Stern, Steinhardt, Tisch, Gallatin, or SCPS should inquire about internship policies at their home school’s advising office.

Approved internship credit counts toward the points needed for graduation, but does NOT count toward the requirements of the Creative Writing Minor. Updated internship guidelines and a revised application form will be available on this website before the start of Spring 2010 Registration.

Internship Opportunities

Below is a list of internship opportunities at various literary companies and organizations. This list is not exhaustive; you can find more internships on NYU Careernet or by visiting The Wasserman Center for Career Development. Please note: an internship's presence on this list or on NYU Careernet does not mean that we automatically approve it for academic credit. If you wish to register for a Creative Writing Internship for credit, you must submit the required internship application form and supervisor's statement of responsibilities.
