Fellowships and Funding
|We're pleased to continue to offer two recently added student fellowships: The Rona Jaffe Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Creative Writing and The NYU Veterans Writing Fellowship. (Note: All incoming students to the Creative
Writing Program receive Departmental Fellowships, ranging from
half-tuition remission to full-tuition remission with generous stipends.
Additionally, all incoming students receive undergraduate teaching
positions during the second year. These positions involve designing and
teaching a semester-long introductory course in creative writing for
undergraduates, as well as attending a teaching practicum offered by the
program. Compensation for teaching is approximately $4,800 per course. For more information, see fellowships and outreach.)|
In recognition of the special contributions women writers make to our culture and society, Rona Jaffe (1931-2005) established The Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Awards program in 1995. It is the only national literary awards program of its kind dedicated to supporting women writers exclusively. Since the program began, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million to emergent women writers. The Foundation has also established fellowships for women writers in Ms. Jaffe's honor at several distinguished institutions, including The Rona Jaffe Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Creative Writing at NYU.
The NYU Veterans Writing Workshop is the Creative Writing Program’s fourth literary outreach program. The graduate students who teach the workshops will have an opportunity to provide an important service to the veteran population and will also be able to share their talents as writers and teachers in a meaningful way. Moreover, the program will provide generous fellowship support for participating students ($12,165 stipend plus half tuition remission).
In addition, since 2008-09 all graduate student Starworks fellows have received substantially more compensation for the work they do with hospitalized children (12-13 fellows received a minimum of $12,165 stipend and half tuition remission, which was up from as little as $3,000 annual stipend and zero tuition remission in past years).
